Tropical Shipping Implements San Juan Terminal Inspection Surcharge
December 6, 2016 --
On November 19, 2016, the Puerto Rico Ports Authority (PRPA) adopted Regulation 8837 which requires that all cargo in containers coming into Puerto Rico through the Port of San Juan be inspected by a scanning procedure.
This Regulation will become effective and applicable to all shipments arriving on December 19th, 2016 to the port of San Juan. Therefore, in order to cover the expenses related to Regulation 8837 effective December 19th, 2016 a fee is being levied by PRPA for all shipments to Puerto Rico.
We further confirm that this fee is not assessed on the shipper or consignee, but on each ship or vessel agent. This cost is designed to cover expenses and costs associated with the enhanced security fee.
Due to this increased cost assessed by the PRPA, Tropical Shipping must implement a Terminal Inspection Surcharge on all FCL containers imported into San Juan.
The Terminal Inspection Surcharge, effective Sunday, December 18, 2016 will be $85.00 per container.
