Information Regarding the Situation with the PSA Halifax and CN Rail

Tropical Shipping would like to provide you with some information on the situation we have been experiencing at PSA Halifax and our CN Rail terminals.  As a fall out from the strike action taken at the port of Montreal a few weeks ago, there is now a significant back log of import & export containers sitting in these locations as well as other East Coast terminals.  CN has struggled to maintain their rail services as the terminals are full and it has made the logistics of loading rail cars extremely challenging.  There has also been issues with securing enough rail cars to move these containers between Upper Canada and the East Coast.

Last week we did see CN in Montreal open a satellite terminal in Valleyfield, QC to help ease the congestion.  There were some issues reported with returning equipment and we did also see some rail not arrive at PSA Halifax as was expected.  This resulted in several containers missing the vessel sailing early this morning from Halifax.

PSA Halifax is also extremely congested as they too have had to deal with increased vessel arrivals and a significant influx of containers that move on rail.  They are working as quickly as possible but space and the access to rail cars is very limited.

This situation is being closely monitored by all parties and congestion is not expected to be resolved quickly.  We will keep you informed as this situation evolves.
